Research expertise

Waste

Research areas

Janusz Kozinski works on environmental engineering especially on thermal waste treatment and metals encapsulation of toxic metals and destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Previous environmental projects

1. Reheat furnaces technologies : reduce steel losses by reducing oxygen oxydation
2. Waste treatment technologies : compacting and balling wastes

Previous collaboration

Weylohouser, Dofasco, Stelco

Available equipment

Melting and casting facilities : range of furnaces, levitation melting, electron beam furnace, sand moulding
Liquid quality control : telegas and alscan for hydrogen measurement in aluminium, reduced pressure test equipment, on-line inclusion measurements in liquid metals

Material characterization : TEM, SEM, electron microprobe, impact, tensile and mechanical testing, X-Ray laboratory, powder characterization, atomic force microscope

Chemical analysis : wet laboratory, vacuum emission spectrometry, X-Ray fluorescence analysis, atomic absorption analysis, carbon, oxygen-nitrogen, sulfur-carbon analysis

Current research projects

1. Encapsulation of hazardous wastes

Person(s) in charge : Kozinski, Janusz A.
Description : The project concerns the development of an encapsulation technology. A hazardous Pulp and Paper industry waste is burned in a modified fluidized bed reactor. The resulting particles are very stable and inert. The reactor also reduces polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) content significantly.
Partners :
Status of research : pilot plant
Availability of results : to be patented
Concerned organizations : Pulp and Paper industry, hazardous waste producers

Interest in enventual collaboration

Industries or organizations : metallurgy industry, pulp and paer, incinerators
Types of collaboration : R-D projects

Potential research areas

Thermal remediation of waste and encapsulation of heavy (toxic) metals, combustion generated pollutants
