Water and wastewater

Research areas

Ronald Gehr works on physico-chemical and biological treatment of water and wastewater. He is especially interested in UV disinfection and phosphorus removal.

Previous environmental projects

1. Ozone treatment for wastewater disinfection
2. Polyelectrolytes used as coagulation chemicals for suspended solids removal

Previous collaboration

Consulting firms, water industry
Québec government, CUM and various other municipalities

Available equipment

Walk-in cold room
Ozone generator
UV reactor
Particle size analyzer
Analytical devices for water : atomic absorption, gas chromatograph, etc.

Current research projects

1. UV inactivation of wastewaters

Person(s) in charge : Gehr, Ronald
Description : The project concerns the optimization of a disinfection process for municipal wastewaters. This ultra-violet reactor causes the inactivation of micro-organisms by breaking DNA links and by preventing their multiplication. The effects of different parameters are studied.
Partners : Trojan Technologies Inc; UV Systems ultraguard
Status of research : bench and commercial scale
Availability of results :
Concerned organizations : municipalities

2. Phosphorus removal

Person(s) in charge : Gehr, Ronald
Description : The project concerns the optimization of physico-chemical processes that can remove phosphorus from wastewaters
Partners : MEF, municipality, consulting firm
Status of research : bench and full scale
Availability of results : free
Concerned organizations : municipalities

Interest in enventual collaboration

Industries or organizations : consulting firms, suppliers
Types of collaboration : R&D projects, consultation
