Description de l'expertise

Water, Waste, Arsenic

Research areas

George Demopoulos works on inorganic contaminant treatments (As, CN-, SCN-,Cu2+,Zn2+,Fe3+, etc) for metalliferrous effluents, volume minimization and treatment of waste solids and acid mine drainage. He is especially interested in efficient metal recovery and disposal, and also immobilization of inorganic contaminants (primarily As).

Previous environmental projects

1. Production of high density Fe(OH)3 sludge from Acid Mine Drainage solutions by Step-wise Neutralization (In collaboration with CANMET; patented)
2. Technoeconomic Comparison of Cyanide Destruction and Regeneration / Recovery Technologies)

(Work done for SIRTEC Inc/Government of Guyana)
3. Development of a dissolution –oxidation- precipitation method for the conversion of As2O3 flue dust to crystalline scorodite)

(Work sponsored by several companies)
4. Development of a surface treatment method for the prevention of lead contamination of drinking water from brass plumbing fittings

(Confidential)
5. Characterization / Fixation of arsenic in neutralization trailings
(Work done for Cogema Resources Inc)

Description des projets en cours

1. Arsenic removal and immobilization

Person(s) in charge : Demopoulos, George P.
Description : The project concerns the development of an ambient pressure crystallization process for the fixation of arsenic by the study of oxidation and precipitation kinetics. Arsenic is present in aqueous effluents and metallurgical dusts. Arsenic is fixed in the form of scorodite, a stable and naturally occurring mineral.
Partners : Barrick Gold Corp., TVX Hellass. S.A, Campbell Mine-Placer Dome, Hatch et Associes Inc.
Status of research : mini-, pilot- scale
Availability of results : free
Concerned organizations : miningand metallurgical industries

2. Iron Precipitation in the Zinc Industry

Person(s) in charge : Demopoulos, George P.
Description : The project concerns the production of saleable quality hematite product from zinc process solutions and offers an alternative to the current large volume iron residue disposal practice.
Partners : Akita Zinc Co of Japan
Status of research :
Availability of results :
Concerned organizations :

3. Production of Hign Density and Clean Gypsum form Industrial Acidic Waters by Controlled Neutralization

Person(s) in charge : Demopoulos, George P.
Description : The project concerns the minimization of the volume of waste gypsum sludges generated by the neutralization of acidic mining / metallurgical waters on the first place and second with the production of saleable quality gypsum from such waters
Partners : Noranda Inc.
Status of research :
Availability of results :
Concerned organizations :
