Research expertise

Water, Air, Waste

Research areas

Dimitrios Berk works on air pollution control and industrial waste treatment. He is especially interested in removal of SO2 and particulates by catalytic and non-catalytic processes.

Previous environmental projects

1. Development of a process for the catalytic transformation of SO2 to sulfur
2. Development of a catalyst for the removal of NO2 from car exhausts
3. Development of a wet-air oxydation process for pulp and paper wastes

Previous collaboration

FCAR, CRSNG
Noranda Technology Centre
Pulp and paper industries, electronic industry

Available equipment

GC, particle size analyzer pore size distribution
Catalytic reactors

Current research projects

1. Crystallization modelisation

Person(s) in charge : Berk, Dimitrios
Description : The project concerns the modelisation of different ways of crystallization for differents pollutants. The model uses residence time distributions inside reactors. It is calibrated and validated with different reactors and pollutants. The developed program will be user-friendly.
The project concerns the study of an activated sludge process used as a wastewater treatment in a pulp and paper industry. The effleuent is composed of different types of wastewater streams coming from the different parts of the plant. Each stream is analysed for BOD removal. Different solutions are then proposed to enhance the activated sludge process.
