Research areas

Eric Salin works in artificial intelligence, instrument design and environmental analysis. He is especially interested in sample introduction techniques and elemental analysis for digested and non-digested samples.

Previous environmental projects

1. Trace analysis instrument
2. Sample introduction for plasma atomic emission and mass spectrometry

Previous collaboration

Ontario Environment ministery

Available equipment

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometers
Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer

Current research projects

1. Trace sample analysis

Person(s) in charge : Salin, Eric D.
Description : The project concerns the development of an apparatus that simplifies sample preparation and allows extremely low level detection. Water has to be sprayed inside the apparatus so that it can concentrate elements; soil is poured inside it without any preparation. The sample can then be analysed in the usual manner.
Partners : Instrumentation company
Status of research : pilot plant
Availability of results : free
Concerned organizations : semi-conductor industries, laboratories

2. Rapid digester

Person(s) in charge : Salin, Eric D.
Description : The project concerns the development of a capsule that takes samples directly from the site. Still in the capsule, it can then be microwaved in order to break down chemical forms into elements. It also reduces volume. The sample can then be analysed in the usual manner.
Partners : Instrumentation company
Status of research : pilot plant
Availability of results : patented; available licence
Concerned organizations : laboratories, industries

Interest in enventual collaboration

Industries or organizations : instrumentation industries and organizations with analysis problems
Types of collaboration : R-D projects through manufacturing

Potential research areas

Trace analysis
Artificial intelligence (process control, expert systems)
